Classroom Rules & Policies

 

You are responsible for knowing any and all rules in the student handbook. Specifically:

  1. Be punctual! 
    1. Students will come to class on time.
    2. You should be in the room and in your seat, ready to go, when the bell rings.
  2. Be prepared! 
    1. Students will come to class with all necessary materials. 

                                                              i.      Unless otherwise specifically instructed, written work submitted in anything other than #2 pencil or dark blue or black ink (not gel) will not be accepted (earns 0) and may not be made up.

                                                            ii.       One exception would be for word search puzzles, which may be done with a highlighter, etc.

    1. Although some crayons, markers, pens, and pencils may be available for you to borrow, you cannot count on that and will be happier with your own.
    2. I will have some new pencils available that you may buy for 25¢.
  1. Be productive! 
    1. If we are working in class, you are expected to be working on the assignment, not chatting or working on assignments for other classes.  “I’m going to do it at home” is not an acceptable alternative.
    2. Personal grooming (hair, makeup, etc.) must be attended to outside of class time. 
    3. Unless otherwise directed for a specific project, you should remain seated in your seat during class time. If you need to sharpen a pencil, do so before class starts or during a time when no one, including both your classmates and me, is presenting information to the class.
    4. When it is time to clean up at the end of the class period, you should participate. Nonparticipation will affect your grade negatively.
  2. Be prompt!  
    1. Unless otherwise specified (such as for projects or large papers), assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the next school day after that in which they are assigned.
    2. The grade earned on daily assignments turned in late may be reduced by 10% for each day they are late.
    3. Projects and papers may not be accepted if turned in late, except by prior arrangement with me, and will earn a zero.
  3. Be polite! 
    1. When I am talking (teaching, directing, explaining), you are not. That includes holding any questions for the appropriate (indicated) time. Do not interrupt!
    2. Use school appropriate language and body language at all times.
    3. If you feel that I have wronged you in some way, I will be happy to discuss the issue with you after school.

                                                              i.      We will not take class time to discuss the issue.

                                                            ii.      We will discuss your situation only, not what other students have or have not done.

  1. If I can’t read it, it’s wrong! Please write carefully and legibly. Sometimes the difference between a right answer and a wrong answer is the difference between an “a” and an “o” or an accent mark.
  2. Use only a regular pencil or a pen with blue or black ink unless otherwise instructed. Using other colors or gel pen will result in a zero grade.
  3. No cheating or stealing!  
    1. Students caught cheating during a test or quiz will receive a zero for their efforts whether they are providing information or receiving it.  This may also result in an immediate disciplinary referral.
    2. Anyone saying a possible answer aloud during any test or quiz will lose a point for each answer said whether or not it is correct.
    3. Plagiarism (using someone else’s words, pictures, charts, music, etc. without giving them credit for them) is a form of stealing and will earn a grade of zero and may earn a disciplinary referral as well.
    4. Other forms of stealing (borrowing anything without first asking and receiving permission) may earn a disciplinary referral.
    5. Using an electronic translator as anything more than a dictionary for single words to do your work is also a form of cheating. It will affect your grade negatively, and Yes, I can tell.
  4. Food and Beverages! 
    1. We talk a lot in class, so plain (not flavored, colored, sweetened, etc.) water ONLY in a closable bottle is always allowed, but I will not write you a pass to buy it.
    2. Chewing gum makes it more difficult to correctly pronounce the vocabulary you will be using. It is not allowed.
    3. Unless it is part of the lesson, food and beverages (except plain water) are not allowed.
  5. Extra Credit
    1. Some assignments may be allowed to be redone at the teacher’s discretion.
    2. I will offer some extra credit opportunities that are available to allstudents.

                                                              i.      Emailing (a message, not just a list of random sentences) or IM’ing me in Spanish

                                                            ii.      Messaging me in Spanish on a social networking site

1.      Facebook – bjmoomey

2.      MySpace – Dona_Barbara (let me know since I don’t normally check this one)

                                                          iii.      Using Spanish (not just “hola”) in a public place where I am able to observe its use. For example:

1.      giving assistance in a store

2.      giving directions on a street

3.      ordering in a restaurant

                                                          iv.      Researching, preparing, and presenting Hispanic food to the class

    1. I will not offer extra credit opportunities to individual students only to make up for work not done or poorly done.
  1. Consequences! 

If you fail to abide by these expectations, possible consequences include:

    1. Verbal Warning
    2. Parent Notification
    3. Detention
    4. Discipline Referral / Write-up
    5. Other consequence at the teacher’s discretion (i.e. washing tables & desks)

 

Course Policies:

    • School and classroom rules and policies will be enforced. Students are expected to follow them. Students are expected to be punctual to class, be prepared for class, be productive in class, be prompt in turning in assignments, and be polite to teachers and other students.
    • Students must write legibly. If I can’t read it, it’s wrong.
    • Students must do their own work. You may work together but should not just copy another student’s work.
    • Students may use ONLY either a regular pencil (#2 or mechanical) or a pen with regular (not gel) blue or black ink unless otherwise instructed.
    • Please read the sheet of classroom rules for a more detailed explanation.
    • Homework: Students are expected to spend at least 10 minutes studying/memorizing current vocabulary and class notes every day. Additional assignments will sometimes be added to this basic assignment.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  1. Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  2. Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
  3. Students present information, concepts and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
  4. Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and the perspectives of the culture studied.
  5. Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and the perspectives of the culture studied.
  6. Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign language.
  7. Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are available only through the foreign language and its cultures.
  8. Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons between the language studied and their own.
  9. Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons between the culture studied and their own.
  10. Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.
  11. Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

 

 

 

Students and their parent or guardian should review this letter plus the classroom rules and expectations.  The first assignment grade will be given for returning this slip, signed by both student and parent/guardian, by August 22, 2014.
